The DeKalb Chamber, in partnership with Atlanta Gas Light, hosted the inaugural VALOR Public Safety Awards on August 7th at the Georgia Piedmont Technical College Conference Center. This event brought together business professionals, community leaders, and first responders, to honor and recognize the exceptional dedication of those who serve in the interest of DeKalb’s safety and well-being.

Frankie Atwater, Sr., President and CEO of DeKalb Chamber, expressed his congratulations to this year’s deserving honorees and extended gratitude to all of DeKalb's first responders for their commitment to protect and serve. Atwater emphasized, “These courageous men and women are the real ‘champions’ of DeKalb, and their dedication to safeguarding our businesses and citizens is truly commendable.”

The program was emceed by Ken Rutherford, Owner of ART Enterprises Creative Services. Rutherford regaled stories of heroism and bravery as finalists and recipients were recognized for their extraordinary acts of service. Recipients for this year’s awards included:

  • Medal of Merit: Master Police Officer Africa Mingo, DeKalb County Police Department
  • Leadership Award: Deputy Chief Thomas Burrell, DeKalb Fire Rescue
  • Lifesaving Award - Police: Master Police Officer Steven Torres, DeKalb County Police Department
  • Lifesaving Award - Fire: Engine 10-C, DeKalb Fire Rescue
  • Medal of Valor: Master Police Officer Da'Shawn Thomas, DeKalb County Police Department
  • Purple Heart: Senior Firefighter Frankie Barker, DeKalb Fire Rescue
